How Much Weight Do You Lose When You Don\’t Eat for a Day?

For those who follow My Fitness Quest, you may know that I started this blog to document my journey to weight loss. Over the last year, I have lost over 40 pounds and have kept it off, and I am constantly inspired by those who have shared their weight loss journeys with me. One of the most popular weight loss bloggers, Amanda from fitmummybytes, shared with me that she was inspired to lose weight after watching the documentary Food Inc., which exposed the alarming truth about the manufacturing of cheap food, especially the fast food industry. She was curious about how much weight she would lose without eating for a whole day, so I thought I would document how much weight I would lose if I went a day without eating.

The Research

I did a quick internet search for “How much weight do you lose when you don’t eat”, and the first result that came up was from the Mayo Clinic. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Mayo Clinic is one of the world’s most prestigious health organizations. In addition to publishing many medical journals, they also conduct extensive research on a variety of health topics, including weight loss.

Looking at the information on their website, the Mayo Clinic says that “consuming fewer calories than what is expended daily results in weight loss. On days when you consume fewer calories than usual, you will likely lose weight.” While this may be true, they also point out that it is not always easy to determine how many calories you need to consume in order to maintain your weight, especially if you want to lose weight quickly. For example, if you have a very active lifestyle and you participate in sports, you may need more calories than the average person.

However, the Mayo Clinic also points out that there are a number of factors that affect how much weight you will lose when you go a day or two without eating. One of the most important factors is how much weight you have to lose. To determine how much weight you will lose, simply subtract your desired weight from your current weight. So, if you want to lose 10 pounds, you would substract 10 from your current weight. The result is the number of calories that you need to avoid in order to lose that weight. The second factor that the Mayo Clinic says impacts how much weight you will lose when you don’t eat is how much weight you have to lose. The more weight that you have to lose, the more calories you will be skipping. Finally, they also recommend that you include some calories in your daily diet, even on days when you don’t eat. This will help ensure that you do not lose too much weight.

The Experiment

Based on my own personal experience and the advice from the Mayo Clinic, I decided to do a little experiment. While I was going to be in Florida for the weekend, I decided to forego eating for the entire day on Friday, and I weighed myself at the end of the day, as well as recorded my calories and nutrients intake. I also kept a food diary of what I ate and drank during the day, so I could more accurately determine my calorie and nutrient intake. One of the most important things to record was my mental state throughout the day. Did I feel hungry? Did I feel full? Was there any particular food that I craved? These are all important factors that can help determine how much weight you will lose when you don’t eat.

Here is what I found out about myself:

How Much Weight Do You Lose When You Don’t Eat for a Day?

Well, I didn’t really lose any weight since I ate a very small breakfast and lunch before the experiment, but I did reduce my calorie intake by 3,500 calories, which corresponds to about 10 pounds according to the Mayo Clinic. This is mainly because I wasn’t really hungry during the day, so I didn’t feel the need to eat as much as I usually do. Also, I noticed that I craved certain foods, especially sweets, but I was able to satisfy my cravings without going overboard, which would’ve resulted in weight gain. Finally, the experiment confirmed what I already knew: calorie intake is important, but so is proper nutrition and the type of food you consume. Too many calories from processed foods and too little nutrients can seriously damage your health, especially if you are already eating a normal diet.

The Results Are Variable

As you may have guessed, the results of this particular experiment are quite variable. Some people will lose a lot of weight while others will lose a little. One of the major reasons for this is due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to determine how much weight you will lose without eating, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose. Another important factor is your current weight. If you are at a normal weight, you will likely not notice much difference, if any, in your weight as a result of going a day or two without eating. However, if you are at a high weight, you will most certainly notice a difference, and it may be a lot, depending on how serious you are about losing weight. Finally, your mental state throughout the day is critical, as it will determine how much weight you lose. If you feel hungry at some point during the day, you will be more likely to snack, which could result in weight gain.
