One of the biggest questions facing those fighting weight loss is how did Christina Aguilera lose weight? We looked at her lifestyle choices and analysed how she changed her diet and workout routines to lose more than three stone (136kg) so that she could wed fiance Max Martin in a fairy tale-like wedding celebration.
The Setting
While it’s fair to say that 2019 has been a transformative year for the singer, her transformation is far from complete. Aguilera walked down the aisle for the second time in the space of a year, this time choosing a pale yellow dress for the occasion. It was a fairytale wedding ceremony and celebration, as her friend and Elle MacLeman’s guest, author Jessica Andrews, put it: “Christina Aguilera’s long journey to complete happiness and beauty coincided with our celebration of love and romance during the most magical and romantic time of the year… As you know, Christina lost a lot of weight for the last wedding, and this time she looked incredible!”
If you want to shed the pounds swiftly, this should be a tonic for you. The singer shed a massive 3.6 stone in the months leading up to the wedding, reducing her weight to a more manageable 123.5kg. But the question remains: how did she do it? What changed? How did this transformation happen?
The Beginning Of The End
The singer’s weight loss journey can be traced back to her battle with weight in her early years. Back in 2013, Aguilera told Elle she was “ready to die” at the age of 29. “I was on a strict diet, and it wasn’t working,” she said. “I was exercising every day but it wasn’t bringing the results I wanted. I felt horrible.”
Aguilera then explained that she had tried every diet known to man and had “tried every fad, and none of it worked for me.” She was also candid about the fact that she had battled alcoholism and drug addiction in the past, a fact that she had kept hidden from the public. “I’ve been through a lot,” she said. “I’ve been in and out of rehab so many times… I don’t feel comfortable talking about this stuff.”
The Turning Point
For many, 2019 will be a transformative year. For the singer, it was a year of changes. It started with the release of her highly-anticipated tenth studio album, CHRISTINA. A, which was released on January 8th and debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Albums chart.
The album followed a string of collaborations that the singer had worked on with some of the biggest producers in the game, including Mike Will Made-It, Vinylz, and Steve Aoki. While some of these tracks were previously released, this was the first collection of songs that the public had been given the opportunity to hear from the album’s perspective. The production values were extraordinary; the album featured some of the most talented and experienced producers and songwriters in the game.
The album’s lead single, “Say Something,” featuring Ed Sheeran, was released in November 2018 and reached number one on the Billboard Top 100, as well as the top twenty in multiple countries around the world. The song was a critical and commercial triumph, garnering a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance.
The album’s second single, “Meter”, featuring Quavo, was released in February 2019 and also reached number one on the Billboard Top 100. The song was certified platinum in just a few months, and is one of the most popular tracks on SoundCloud, racking up millions of plays around the world. In the United States, the song has been played more than 26.7 million times since its release.
In March 2019, the singer opened up about her struggles with addiction in a powerful letter to her fans. In the open letter, Aguilera shared her journey to recovery, explaining that the motivation behind her decision to enter rehab “wasn’t my health, [but] the health of my family and friends.” It’s a touching letter, showing just how much her music has helped her during her time in recovery. “Since I entered rehab, I’ve been feeling stronger, healthier, and happier,” she wrote. “And I want to keep that feeling by making healthy choices and becoming more active. I look forward to the day when I can share with you my progress and tell you how grateful I am for all your love and support.”
Aguilera’s next single, “Change,” featuring Miguna and Tyga, was released in May 2019 and became her first top ten hit, peaking at number seven on the Top 100. It’s a stripped back track that sees the singer expressing her frustration at not being able to change the way she feels or behaves. “Change” was accompanied by a brilliant music video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, that saw the singer walk down a white corridor, surrounded by her friends and family. As she makes her way to the altar, she takes solace in the arms of a man who appears to be there to support her.
The Workout Routine
If there’s one place we’d expect to see Aguilera lose the most weight, it’s her gym. But that’s not the case. While she did admit to having shed some pounds while in the gym, she doesn’t seem to have changed her workout routine at all. Instead, the singer has been documenting her journey to transformation on her Instagram page, sharing her latest exercises and diet choices with her fans and followers.
As we’ve established, 2019 was a big year for Aguilera. She released her tenth studio album, won a Grammy, and got engaged. There have been some big changes in her life in the past year, and it’s made the transformation process that much more fascinating. Here’s hoping that 2020 is the year that Aguilera finally sheds her remaining weight.
