The researchers concluded that “these findings indicate that [baking soda] has a neutral effect on body weight, at least in the short term.”

Similarly, the American College of Obesity (ACO) recently published a review of controlled trials in which they examined the weight loss effects of baking soda compared to a placebo, anti-obesity medication, or no treatment at all. After analyzing 12 RCTs, the team found that those who consumed more than 1 gram of baking soda per day had significant reductions in their body weight and BMI compared to those who did not consume baking soda. Furthermore, they reported that, “[i]n patients who are obese, drinking a placebo may lead to greater weight loss than taking a no treatment option.”

Another meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials involving 1,124 participants found that those who consumed 1 gram of baking soda or more per day demonstrated a weighted mean difference of -1.68 kg in their weight loss, compared to the control group. The researchers attributed this effect to the substance’s ability to reduce caloric intake through its effect on satiety. Simply put, the study authors suggested that “baking soda has the potential to be a safe and effective tool in the weight loss arsenal.”

When Should You Take It?

Although the data supports the use of baking soda for weight loss, the review by the ACO suggested that people should avoid taking it in combination with weight loss medications or supplements, particularly in the case of those suffering from hypertension or diabetes. According to the team’s review of the literature, there is a possibility that the substance may interact with these medications, and thus, increase the risk of adverse effects. While there needs to be more study about this issue, it is still a good idea to consult your doctor or dietitian about what foods to avoid when taking baking soda for weight loss.

How Much Should You Take?

The answer to this question really depends on you. Just remember that the dose varies from one gram to three grams per day. So, you can start small and build up your dosage as you see fit. Alternatively, you can talk to your doctor about what would be the appropriate starting dose for you. Another important point to make is that, even though baking soda is commonly known for its appetite suppressing effect, the substance does not work for everyone.
